To discuss about America First policy, first we should decide what does it means. It would be a very hard task if we would try to find it out from the tweets of the President, so let’s just have a look on the same Wikipedia article, which says: America First refers to a foreign policy in the United States that emphasizes American nationalism, economic nationalism and non-interventionism, in rejection of internationalist policies.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, there were no doubts that the only superpower around the globe is the United States. In the following decades the dominant power of the world used its advantage in the foreign policy as well: maintained order in the Balkan, NATO has successfully expanded, fought three major wars in the Middle East and became the absolute power in the region, huge fleets in the Pacific and serious military presence in the allied states. The US were so confident that shaped the system of the international relations to its own interest.
But as the US foreign policy is turning to more and more passive and non-interventionist, there are rivals emerging who would be very happy to see a bit faster fall of the American hegemony. Chinese and Russian governments are cheer for the American political isolationism: the more US soldier, diplomat and intelligence officer stays behind their national borders, the more ground opens for them.
In the 90’s the US took full responsibility to maintain the world’s order. Hence if it isolates itself, today’s international system will collapse and the world will set on fire again. These are the consequences which a President has to count with, when he wants to pull out his country from the international politics…
